Is baby sign language derived frpm ASL?
Yes, sign language used to communicate with children basic needs is derived from ASL, but not one in the same. ASL has it’s own individual sentence structure, grammar, and culture.

How to support Rosemary with phonological awareness?
- Nursery rhymes – repetition and rhythm aid with noticing sound patterns
- Exagerate sounds in speech (ex: “b-b-b-all”)
- Reading books with repetive sounds or phrases
- When singing, pause for participation to teach conversational rhythm
What is happening in Rosemary’s brain at 12 months to support communication skills?
- Her brain is making the connection between sounds she hears and meaning (words, tone, facial expressions). Neural connections are occuring when Rosemary hears “milk”, sees bottle, feels hunger relieved, and in observation of caregiver
- Receptive language develops prior to expressive language, so Rosemary can understand emotional tone, common words, and her name – she can understand quite a bit already 😉
- “Perceptual narrowing” is happening – I had never heard of this before – go ahead and nerd out here
- Communication learning happens through social engagement – she is learning when she makes sounds, others respond, she is noticing how she is influencing the environment with her presence 💓
- Rosemary’s nervous system impacts language development – when the body feels connected to others, engaged, safe – learning and exploration can flourish
- “Joint attention” occurs between 6 – 12 months of age. This is the name for Rosemary communicating attention through her gaze or pointing to share an experience with another
